How much does Saudi Arabia hate women? So much so that 15 girls died in a school fire in Mecca in 2002, after “morality police” barred them from fleeing the burning building — and kept firefighters from rescuing them — because the girls were not wearing headscarves and cloaks required in public. And nothing happened. No one was put on trial. Parents were silenced.
I’m sorry I’m all for cultural understanding but there’s no way anyone can convince me that Islam and some of the Middle Eastern countries aren’t a sexist culture.
Islam isn’t the cause of the sexism, the cause of it is the inability of these people to modify their outdated gender/societal roles. It’s about being brought up in a certain environment. There are plenty of Middle Eastern, Muslim countries that function completely fine with plenty of Islamic folk. Horrible occurrences like this have female victims threatened by horrid misogyny, but I can bet you there are other things happening in Egypt, untied to women’s issues… That are just as bad. The world can be a horrible place, and not just toward the women of a society.
Islamophobia doesn’t stop things like this from happening, better education, lending help to women subject to abuse, providing opportunities for the oppressed, arranging refuge, stuff like that makes a positive difference.
I don’t like the whole ‘It’s misogyny so it’s obviously the fault of Islam’ mentality, because it’s a lot more complicated than that. There are horrible misogynistic occurrences in Western countries as well. But we don’t blame it on Christianity. (Which, to be fair is quite sexist as well in many aspects of its nature. That is because it’s a scripture, just like the Qur’an. (It’s old as balls.))
